Maryland Native Scott McGill Returns to Race the Maryland Cycling Classic
Scott McGill, a professional cyclist from Maryland, is returning home to race in the Maryland Cycling Classic (MCC) after a successful season in Europe. McGill spoke about the excitement of racing on his home roads and the support he received from his family and friends. He described the move to Europe as a dream for many aspiring professionals and expressed his eagerness to compete on the world stage.
McGill had an impressive 2022 season, including stage victories and podium finishes in several races. His success earned him a spot on the US Road World Championships squad and an opportunity to race in the MCC. Although he didn’t meet his expectations in last year’s race, McGill praised the event and the experience of racing in Baltimore, where he has trained for many years.
After the MCC, McGill went on to participate in the World Championships in Australia, where he took part in an epic 227km breakaway. This performance solidified his decision to live and race full-time overseas, leading him to join the Human Powered Health Cycling team.
McGill, a native of Fallston, Maryland, began his racing career in mountain biking and later switched to road cycling. He has previous experience racing in Europe, which prepared him for the challenges he would face. However, McGill faced his own challenges upon moving to Spain, including injuries and a car accident that sidelined him for the first half of the year.
Despite the setbacks, McGill is grateful for the support he has received from his team and the cycling community in Girona, Spain. He mentioned having access to a team service course for any mechanical issues and the presence of teammates and staff nearby, which has helped ease the transition of living in a new culture.
McGill made his debut with the Human Powered Health team in Belgium and has been participating in various races since then. He is now looking forward to returning to Maryland and racing in the MCC with a team that is determined to win. McGill expressed his ambition to better the team’s second-place finish from last year and discussed the challenging nature of the course.
The team rosters for the MCC have yet to be announced, but McGill and his team are determined to make their ambitions come true in the race taking place on September 3, 2023.
The Maryland Cycling Classic presented by UnitedHealthcare is an international pro cycling race that features some of the world’s best cyclists. It is part of a four-day weekend community celebration of health and wellness, featuring participatory events, an interactive festival, local food and drinks, and family-friendly activities. The event is endorsed by Maryland and Baltimore Civic Leaders and is managed and marketed by industry leaders Medalist Sports and KOM Sports Marketing.
