Remco Evenepoel extends lead in Vuelta a España

Remco Evenepoel, of Soudal Quick-Step, has increased his advantage in the Vuelta a España with another impressive performance.

Evenepoel secured his 19th La Vuelta leader’s jersey after comfortably completing the 186.2km stage five from Morella to Burriana. The stage featured challenging terrain, including a classified climb and numerous roundabouts.

But it was Evenepoel’s strategic move in the intermediate sprint in Nules that helped him extend his lead in the general classification. With the support of teammate Casper Pedersen, Evenepoel won the sprint and earned six bonus seconds, bringing his buffer to eleven seconds.

Reflecting on his decision, Evenepoel said, “I know that these seconds won’t probably make any difference at the end of the race, but as the speed went up, I said to myself I should just go for the bonifications, especially as it didn’t cost me any energy.”

With the race now heading into its second summit finish in Aragon, Evenepoel will face another challenging climb. Pico del Buitre is a 10.9km ascent with 15% slopes, including some within the final kilometer. These slopes are likely to create gaps between the contenders in the general classification.
