24-year-old Belgian cyclist Viktor Verschaeve has announced his retirement from professional cycling due to a long-standing injury that hindered his performance throughout his career. Despite undergoing surgeries and consulting specialists, no clear solution was found, leading Verschaeve to make the difficult decision to end his cycling career at such a young age.
In an explanation of his decision, Verschaeve stated, “Already in 2021, my first pro year, the injury caused troubles. They assumed a narrowed iliac artery, but a surgery didn’t improve much. At the end of ’22, I underwent another surgery, which didn’t bring any solution either.”
In an effort to allow Verschaeve to recover at his own pace, he was transferred to the Lotto Dstny Development Team for the 2023 season. However, recent examinations revealed that there is no medical solution for his injury, leading to the final decision to retire. Verschaeve expressed his gratitude to Lotto Dstny for their support during the process.
Verschaeve began his professional career with Lotto Soudal in 2021 after two years with the Development Team. He had notable achievements in the U23 category, including a second-place finish at Liège-Bastogne-Liège U23 in 2019 and a stage win at the Tour de Savoie Mont Blanc in 2020.
While Verschaeve is disappointed that his cycling career was cut short, he remains at peace with his decision. Regarding his future, he stated, “It’s not yet clear what the future will bring. I have several options, I remain in love with the cycling world but first I’ll take some time to sort things out…”.
