Michael Woods Claims a Historic Victory in Route d’Occitanie
Michael Woods emerged victorious in the overall classification of Route d’Occitanie 2022 on Sunday, capping off an incredible performance. Despite challenging crosswinds, Woods managed to maintain his lead and secure a well-deserved win in the French stage race.
As expected, the race was torn apart in the final day, with the peloton splitting into multiple groups. The Israel – Premier Tech riders, including Carl Fredrik Hagen and Woods, strategically positioned themselves near the front and found themselves in the select group that broke away with 70 km to go.
The front group collaborated effectively, working in unison towards the finish line. Woods faced no difficulties in defending his overall lead and the stage culminated in a sprint amongst the reduced group of riders.
Hagen’s stellar performance boosted his position in the final classification, earning him a commendable 14th place.
Reflecting on his remarkable achievement, Woods expressed his delight, stating, “This is the first stage race I have won in my career. I’m really happy with the result and really pleased with the teamwork. I always felt protected.”
He further praised the efforts of his teammates, commending Cole Kessler for his role at the front, and Guy Sagiv and Taj Jones for their exceptional work positioning him in the crosswind. Woods also acknowledged Hagen’s vital support in the small group towards the end of the race.
With this victory under his belt, Woods now eagerly looks forward to the Tour de France.
