Derek Gee Shines in Giro d’Italia with Another Podium Finish

Canadian cyclist Derek Gee continues to make an impressive showing in this year’s Giro d’Italia. Gee, who rides for Israel – Premier Tech, secured another podium place in the prestigious race after a challenging stage 10.

Reflecting on his achievement, Gee said, “I think it’s going to take a while for it to sink in what I did out there today but I’m really happy with my race.”

The stage was marked by heavy rain and cold temperatures, making it a demanding day for the riders. Undeterred, Gee attacked from the start and eventually broke away with former teammate Alessandro De Marchi and Magnus Cort.

Despite facing adversity, the trio managed to build a significant lead of nearly five minutes on the peloton. As the gap narrowed towards the end, Gee, De Marchi, and Cort displayed remarkable tenacity, refusing to give up. With just 45 seconds and 10 kilometers left, they successfully held off the chasing peloton and turned their focus towards the stage win.

Gee made a late attack with over one kilometer to go, but was caught by Cort, who sprinted to victory. Nevertheless, Gee claimed a well-deserved second place, marking his second podium finish in his debut Giro d’Italia.

Reflecting on the race, Gee admitted that this second place hurt a little more than the previous one. He said, “I could really see the victory right there. I knew that Cort was faster than me and that I shouldn’t go up against him head-to-head. I tried a late attack, but ultimately, I ended up in a sprint against him anyway.”

With the Giro d’Italia still ongoing, Gee remains focused on the challenges ahead. He expressed his determination, saying, “The Giro is still long, but I will try not to think about that right now as my legs really hurt after today!”

Gee’s impressive performance in the Giro d’Italia is a testament to his dedication and talent. As the race continues, fans can expect to see more exciting moments from this Canadian neo-pro.
