Vincenzo Nibali, the decorated Grand Tour winner, will make a return to Team Astana for the 2022 cycling season. Nibali previously rode for the team from 2013 to 2016, during which he achieved many of his career highlights.
Nibali expressed his excitement about rejoining Team Astana, saying, “I am very happy to come back to Team Astana, because for me it is a real family that has given me a lot and together with which I have achieved my greatest successes.”
During his previous four seasons with Team Astana, Nibali secured 22 wins, including two victories at the Giro d’Italia in 2013 and 2016 and one triumph at the Tour de France in 2014. Nibali also won an impressive nine Grand Tour stages while wearing the blue colors of the Kazakh team.
Alexandr Vinokurov, General Manager of Team Astana, expressed his enthusiasm about Nibali’s return, stating, “Vincenzo Nibali doesn’t need any introduction – he is a true champion and leader. Probably, he spent the best years of his career in our team, and I think it is symbolic that he will finish such a great cycling career in Team Astana.”
The team is also looking forward to utilizing Nibali’s experience to mentor and support young riders in their growth and development. Vinokurov believes that Nibali still has more to offer in the sport and that they can rely on him as the team leader to achieve new successes together.
