Danny van Poppel inches away from victory in Hamburg
After a thrilling sprint finish, Danny van Poppel came agonizingly close to winning the WorldTour classic in Hamburg. The 30-year-old cyclist, who had previously won in Cologne in May, narrowly missed out on a German double as Mads Pedersen edged him out at the last moment.
The decisive moment of the race came during the last crossing of the Waseberg, a climb that often proves crucial in Hamburg. The increased pace on the climb created a selection in the peloton, and Nils Politt took advantage by attacking with two other riders. They built a small lead and entered the last kilometer ahead. However, Pedersen managed to bridge the gap and overtake them as a soloist on the finishing straight.
Danny van Poppel, showing impressive speed, emerged from the chasing pack and came extremely close to overtaking the former world champion in the long sprint.
The final results of the race were as follows:
01 M. Pedersen 4:36:35
02 D. Van Poppel +0:00
03 E. Viviani +0:00
Reflecting on the race, Danny van Poppel expressed his disappointment at coming so close to victory. He said, “It was harder than in the years before but on the last climb I was still there. Then we played a super-good team tactic with Nils and Marco. I’m disappointed because it was so close. It would have been a big win for me and the team.”
On the other hand, Christian Pömer, Sports Director, praised the team’s performance and showed satisfaction with the podium finish. He said, “I’m really proud how the guys raced today. Normally you’re disappointed with second place in the sprint, but today I’m really happy with the podium. The team showed a lot of character and fought all the way to the finish line.”
