Wout Van Aert Settles for Bronze at European Time Trial Championships

Belgian cyclist Wout Van Aert was awarded the bronze medal at the European time trial championships held in Emmen. Despite a strong start and being only four seconds behind the leader at the first checkpoint, Van Aert ultimately had to settle for third place. “I don’t think a better result was possible today,” Van Aert expressed after the race.

Van Aert admitted that he lacked the power to fight for a higher position in the second half of the race. “I am usually strong in the last part of a time trial, but I was completely spent today,” he said, disappointed with his performance.

Reflecting on the course, Van Aert acknowledged that it didn’t deceive anyone. “This course doesn’t lie, so I’ll have to settle for bronze,” he said, accepting the outcome.

The cyclist also shared his difficulty in accepting the news about his friend and fellow cyclist Nathan Van Hooydonck. Van Hooydonck was forced to end his career after being fitted with an internal defibrillator. “I am grateful and happy that he is still here, but it is a huge blow for him to give up his passion,” Van Aert said heartfeltly.

Van Aert’s third-place finish at the European time trial championships marks another notable achievement in his cycling career. Despite the disappointment of not securing the European title, Van Aert remains a formidable force in the world of cycling.
