Wout van Aert Secures First Win of the Season at Volta ao Algarve

Wout van Aert’s unexpected sprint victory on the third stage of the Volta ao Algarve has surprised many. The Belgian cyclist had initially planned to conserve energy for the upcoming stages, but he made a spontaneous decision to join the sprint. Explaining his change of mind, Van Aert stated, “I felt my legs were good, and I thought: I’d better go for it.”

Expressing the significance of his win, Van Aert acknowledged the prestige of the race, saying, “It’s nice to start the season with a win. The Volta ao Algarve is a prestigious race, and it’s not easy to win a sprint here. It gives me a lot of confidence.”

Following his triumph, Van Aert has climbed in the general classification, currently standing in seventh place, 22 seconds behind the leader. Looking ahead to the time trial, he admitted, “I haven’t touched my time trial bike all winter, so I don’t expect much from it. Anyway, it will be tough to beat Remco Evenepoel, but of course, I’ll do everything I can to have a good time trial.”

Van Aert’s unexpected win has placed him in a promising position, with potential to climb further in the rankings. This sudden success adds an element of unpredictability to the remaining stages of the race.
