Wout Poels Takes Third Place on Stage 16 of La Vuelta
In an intense stage following the rest day, Wout Poels of Bahrain Victorious secured an impressive third-place finish on Stage 16 of La Vuelta. The stage consisted of flat and winding roads for the first 115km, followed by a challenging 5km ascent. The early breakaway was reeled in just before the climb began, setting the stage for an exciting finish.
Jonas Vingegaard of Team Jumbo-Visma made a decisive attack with 4km to go, leaving the peloton behind. Finn Fisher-Black of UAE Emirates was the first to respond but couldn’t match Vingegaard’s pace. Meanwhile, Poels launched his own attack alongside Michael Storer of Team DSM and managed to pass him in the final 200m, securing a well-deserved third place.
Bahrain Victorious had an impressive performance overall, with four more riders finishing in the top 20. Mikel Landa maintained his seventh place in the General Classification standings. Neil Stephens, the team’s lead Sports Director, expressed satisfaction with the team’s strategic approach. He said, “We tried to conserve energy and only follow important attacks… We are happy that GC stayed exactly as it was.”
Reflecting on his performance, Poels said, “It was a nice climb, I felt really good at the end. It was nice to do my race… I think it was a good performance.” Despite narrowly missing out on the stage victory, Poels’ impressive finish solidifies his position as a strong contender in the race.
Tomorrow’s stage will feature the challenging summit finish of Alto de l’Angliru, setting the stage for a thrilling battle among the General Classification contenders as La Vuelta draws closer to its finale in Madrid.
