Nordhagen secures mountain jersey in final stage of Deutschland Tour
Nordhagen had already made an advance on Saturday for the overall victory in the mountains classification by collecting some points. In the final stage to Saarbrücken, he only had to cross the finish line to take home the dark polka dot jersey. In the final kilometers, he even tried for the stage win, but he didn’t succeed. Nordhagen finished eighth and moved up to seventh in the general classification.”I really didn’t expect a week like this”, Nordhagen said afterwards. “As a team we wanted to go for the mountain jersey and the fact that I ended up winning it is super nice. Beforehand, I had no idea what to expect from my first World Tour race. My new teammates took care of me really well and it was super motivating to work with them. I look back on a great week and I’m going to hang the jersey in a nice place on the wall.”
“He belonged to the best three climbers in this race.”
Robert Wagner
Sports director Robert Wagner: “The main goal today was to secure Jorgen’s mountain jersey. It soon became clear that this was going to succeed, as the breakaway riders picked up all the mountain points. In the finale, he rode with the very best riders and even got away. I was hoping for a moment of hesitation, but that didn’t happen. Still, that action moved him up to place seven in the general classification.”According to Wagner, the team made the most of this week. “We knew we had to take advantage of the chances we got. Although every stage was super tough, the course didn’t really lend itself to the riders we had with us. Winning the mountain jersey was a realistic goal for us. In the end, Jorgen proved to be our strongest rider and showed he belonged to the best three climbers in this race. For him to finish his first race at this level like that is incredible.”
