Vingegaard solos to magnificent stage victory in the Giro d’Italia
# Jonas Vingegaard Clinches Stage Victory in Giro d’Italia with Decisive Climb
In an exhilarating display of strength and strategy, Jonas Vingegaard of Team Visma | Lease a Bike achieved a remarkable solo victory at the Giro d’Italia, conquering the challenging ascent of Blockhaus. “It’s absolutely amazing, a dream come true,” Vingegaard expressed following his triumph. “It’s something I honestly never thought would be possible. I really have to thank the team for that. My teammates worked incredibly hard today, and I’m very happy that I was able to finish it off for them. It’s truly been a fantastic day for us.”
With this victory, Vingegaard became the 115th rider in cycling history to secure a stage win in the Giro d’Italia (1), along with victories in the Tour de France (4) and Vuelta a España (5). His victory was made possible through the diligent efforts of his teammates, who successfully managed the race pace and maintained control over the breakaway.
As the race drew closer to the final climb, strong performances from teammates Davide Piganzoli and Sepp Kuss set the stage for Vingegaard’s decisive attack. The 29-year-old rider surged ahead, dropping competitors Felix Gall and Giulio Pellizzari, before riding solo across the finish line. This victory lifted Vingegaard to second place in the general classification, now trailing pink jersey holder Afonso Eulálio by just over three minutes.
“It was a very tough climb. There was a strong headwind, which made it even harder,” Vingegaard remarked. “Once the moment came to attack, I didn’t hesitate. It’s great that I was able to take back a lot of time on Eulálio today and gain an advantage over the rest of my rivals. Felix was incredibly strong today and is definitely someone we have to keep an eye on. We’re really looking forward to what the rest of the Giro d’Italia will bring.”
For Team Visma | Lease a Bike, this marks a significant achievement as they extend their streak to fifteen consecutive Grand Tours with at least one stage victory, showcasing their consistent excellence in cycling competitions.
