Vingegaard shows strength in second stage of Giro d’Italia, overshadowed by major crash
# Vingegaard Shines Amid Crashes in Thrilling Second Stage of Giro d’Italia
In the second stage of the Giro d’Italia, spanning 221 kilometers, all eyes were on the ascent-filled finale. The Dutch squad, rallying in support of team leader Jonas Vingegaard, maintained a strong position throughout the stage. However, as the peloton navigated the final climb, a significant crash involving teammates Wilco Kelderman and Tim Rex overshadowed the day’s events.
Vingegaard made a decisive move on the concluding climb, accelerating alongside Giulio Pellizzari and Lennert Van Eetvelt. Unfortunately, their efforts were thwarted in the dying moments of the race, allowing Guillermo Thomas Silva to power through and claim victory, finishing in a time of 5:39:25.
Marc Reef, the sport director, reflected on the day with mixed emotions. “There was nothing we could do about the crash. The corner was slippery and the pace in the peloton was high. When riders go down in front of you, there is no way to avoid it,” he noted, adding uncertainty over Kelderman’s condition: “At the moment, we don’t yet know how Wilco is doing.”
Despite the incident, Reef commended Vingegaard for his ability to quickly refocus. “Jonas was able to quickly switch focus after the crash. He shows that he is in excellent shape… It’s good to see how strong Jonas is.”
Vingegaard echoed this sentiment, expressing his thoughts post-race: “The idea was to thin out the group significantly in order to avoid the dangers in the final kilometer. I felt good today and I would have liked to sprint for the win, but it was much more important to reach the finish safely.”
