Vingegaard seizes power in Vuelta a España with stage win on Bola del Mundo
# Vingegaard Dominates Vuelta a España with Stunning Stage Victory at Bola del Mundo
In a thrilling display of cycling prowess, Jonas Vingegaard solidified his hold on the Vuelta a España with a remarkable stage win atop the notorious Bola del Mundo. After a demanding 165-kilometre trek, Vingegaard expressed his elation, stating, “I’m very happy I could put the finishing touches on things today. I felt better than I did in the mountain stages over the past week. It’s nice to be able to reward the hard work of my team-mates.” He acknowledged the pivotal role of his team throughout the race, noting, “Not just today, but over the last three weeks they’ve been fantastic.”
With the final stage in Madrid approaching, the competition intensified on this penultimate day. The riders faced a taxing mountain stage leading to a challenging hors catégorie finish. A significant breakaway formed early on, but the peloton, buoyed by Team Visma | Lease a Bike’s numerical superiority, maintained pressure to keep the leaders in check. Riders like Ben Tulett and Sepp Kuss showcased their strength, particularly as Kuss celebrated his 31st birthday on this demanding route.
As the race approached the steep slopes of the Bola del Mundo, João Almeida made the first significant move, desperately trying to close a 44-second gap behind Vingegaard. The Danish champion responded quickly, launching his own aggressive attack. Vingegaard navigated the daunting final kilometre solo, securing his third stage win in this year’s edition, while inching closer to what could be his historic overall victory in the Spanish Grand Tour.
“It was a hard but beautiful day,” Kuss remarked after finishing second. “UAE Team Emirates really went for it, but we were ready. We started the final climb with five riders in the favourites’ group, so the situation was ideal. Everyone worked incredibly hard to make this possible. It’s brilliant that Jonas could finish it off in this way. He attacked at the perfect moment. It was impressive to see.”
With the finish line in Madrid looming, anticipation builds as Vingegaard prepares for the celebratory conclusion of an epic three-week journey filled with trials, triumphs, and remarkable teamwork.
