Vingegaard extends lead over rivals in seventeenth stage of Vuelta a España
# Vingegaard Bolsters Lead in Seventeenth Stage of Vuelta a España
In an exciting seventeenth stage of the Vuelta a España, Jonas Vingegaard managed to extend his lead over rivals on a challenging climb at Alto de El Morredero. The stage commenced in O Barco de Valdeorras, showcasing a similar setup to the previous day, with a twelve-rider breakaway quickly forming. Dylan van Baarle and Wilco Kelderman surged ahead, controlling the pace for the peloton as the summit finish approached.
As the ascent unfolded, the breakaway was caught, allowing the general classification contenders to vie for supremacy. With strong contributions from Matteo Jorgenson, Sepp Kuss, and Ben Tulett, only a select few riders remained in contention. Just a few kilometers from the finish, Giulio Pellizzari executed a decisive attack. Vingegaard finished the stage in fourth place, gaining invaluable seconds on competitor João Almeida, further solidifying his 50-second advantage in the overall classification.
“I didn’t have my best day. You just need to survive those days, and I managed to do so. To still gain two seconds on Almeida is of course a nice bonus,” remarked Vingegaard after the race atop Alto de El Morredero.
Sports director Jesper Mørkøv reflected on the team’s performance, expressing pride despite Vingegaard’s off day. “Our goal today was indeed to go for the stage win. Dylan and Wilco once again did fantastic work. Jonas didn’t have his best day, but he was able to respond to the attacks. We still have the red jersey and are in a strong position in the general classification. We can be proud of that.”
Looking ahead, Vingegaard prepares for an individual time trial in Valladolid, where the riders will tackle a flat 27-kilometer course. “Hopefully I’ll have a good day on the time trial bike tomorrow. It’s almost completely flat. We’ll see, but I’m looking forward to it,” he stated, anticipating the challenges that lie in the concluding stages of the Vuelta.
