In a stunning performance that solidified his status as a top competitor in professional cycling, Jonas Vingegaard clinched his 50th career victory at the Giro d’Italia, conquering the demanding climb of Corno alle Scale on stage nine. Reflecting on his win, Vingegaard remarked, “Deze ritzege was aanvankelijk geen doel voor ons, maar ik ben erg blij dat ik de ploeg de overwinning kon bezorgen” (This stage win was not initially a goal for us, but I am very happy that I could bring the team the victory).
The day proved challenging for the peloton as they faced a long flat approach before starting the 11-kilometer ascent to the finish. While eight riders initially formed the break of the day, the peloton kept them within sight, with Team Visma | Lease a Bike making a strong impression as the race progressed.
The pivotal moment came on the final climb when the favorites began to show their strength. Felix Gall made the first significant move, but Vingegaard was the only rider able to match his pace. The two quickly passed the last remaining breakaway rider, Giulio Ciccone.
As they approached the steep final kilometers, Vingegaard seized the moment to launch an attack, ultimately soloing to victory. This impressive win marked his second stage triumph of the Giro and his milestone 50th victory overall. Davide Piganzoli, riding for the same team, finished a commendable third.
“I’m happy for Davide that he was able to show himself with his third place,” Vingegaard commented. He also added, “It feels good to end the week with a win.” Highlighting the team’s strong position, he continued, “We are in a good position after nine stages and are looking forward to the rest of this Giro, starting with the time trial on Tuesday.”
The results of Stage 9 showcased Vingegaard’s excellence, finishing with a time of 04:20:21, followed by Gall at 12 seconds behind, and Piganzoli 34 seconds off the pace.
As the Giro d’Italia heads into the next stages, all eyes will be on Vingegaard, who is poised to maintain his lead in this prestigious cycling event.
