Van Hooydonck’s Promising Cycling Career Cut Short Due to Heart Condition

27-year-old professional cyclist, Van Hooydonck, has announced his retirement from the sport after being fitted with an internal defibrillator to correct a potential cardiac arrhythmia. The Belgian rider was diagnosed with a heart muscle anomaly following a near-death experience last week. This shocking discovery has abruptly ended Van Hooydonck’s promising career.

In a statement, Van Hooydonck expressed his gratitude to the medical team and fans for their support in his recovery. He said, “I realise that I was incredibly lucky… I’m fine now, but I still have to deal with the fact that this marks the end of my professional career. I would like to express my gratitude to the people who helped me, the medical team at the hospital and all the fans who sent me messages.”

Despite the disappointment of ending his career prematurely, Van Hooydonck remains positive and has shifted his focus to his upcoming fatherhood. He said, “I will now focus on my recovery and my upcoming fatherhood. Everything is going well with Alicia and the pregnancy, and we eagerly anticipate the birth. That really helps me now.”

Van Hooydonck’s retirement highlights the unpredictable nature of professional sports and serves as a reminder of the importance of prioritising health and well-being in athletic careers.
