In an impressive display of skill and determination, Fem van Empel secured her 50th professional victory at the prestigious cyclo-cross event in Heerde. “Reaching my 50th victory was definitely one of my goals for this winter, so it’s fantastic that it’s already happened today,” Van Empel remarked after crossing the finish line. She had even prepared for the occasion, thinking ahead about a possible celebration, stating, “A sign with ‘50’ on it seemed quite fitting. I really enjoyed this one.”

Van Empel kicked off the race with a strong start on the challenging course surrounding Heerderstrand. However, an unexpected bike change early in the race put her in a position to chase the leaders. Undeterred, Van Empel fought her way back into contention. In a gripping penultimate lap, she caught up with race leader Bentveld and maintained her presence alongside Van Alphen, who was also vying for the top spot.

Ultimately, Van Empel’s experience and composure shone through in the technical finale. “I had a good start, but decided to change bikes in the opening lap after someone rode into me. It was a tough course, so the gap was still manageable,” she explained. In the final stretch, she applied pressure to Van Alphen in a tricky section of the course. “Mistakes were easy to make on this course, and in the end I gained a small advantage. That turned out to be enough to make the difference today.”
