Van Aert heads to first monument of the season with ambition

# Van Aert Sets Sights on Milano-Sanremo: Aiming for Glory

As the 117th edition of Milano-Sanremo approaches this Saturday, riders are gearing up for a grueling race that will see them navigate nearly 300 kilometers, with key climbs like the Cipressa and the Poggio expected to play pivotal roles in the outcome. Team Visma | Lease a Bike is looking to assert its dominance once again in the Italian classic, bolstered by the talents of their star cyclist, Wout van Aert.

The 31-year-old Belgian is enjoying a solid run of form and has already tasted victory in Sanremo, winning La Primavera back in 2020. Reflecting on his anticipation for this year’s race, Van Aert commented, “I definitely wanted to start there again this season. The race is one of the most beautiful on the cycling calendar. I really enjoyed watching last year’s exciting edition, so it’s extra motivating to be back at the start soon.”

In the weeks leading up to the race, Van Aert has made significant strides in his preparation, participating in both Strade Bianche and Tirreno–Adriatico. “Overall, I’m satisfied with how I felt during those races,” he stated. “I had a good week at Tirreno–Adriatico, where I was able to test myself several times. I’ve done everything I can to be ready. It’s the start of an important month with many top classics. I hope to be competitive everywhere. I’m not starting as the top favorite, but my goal is to win the race. I absolutely believe in my chances. Milano-Sanremo is a race where many scenarios are possible,” Van Aert concluded.

Head of Racing Grischa Niermann is equally optimistic about the team’s prospects. “We can rely on a strong group. In addition to Wout, riders like Matteo (Jorgenson) and Christophe (Laporte) have shown in recent races that they are in good form. With them, we can certainly play a role in the finale. We head to Milan with a lot of ambition,” he noted.

As Team Visma | Lease a Bike prepares for this monumental race, the excitement is palpable. With the strategic climbs looming, all eyes will be on their formidable roster come race day.
