Van Aert fights to podium after stunning Milan-Sanremo finale
# Van Aert Secures Podium Finish in Thrilling Milano-Sanremo Finale
In an exhilarating 117th edition of Milano-Sanremo, Wout van Aert emerged as a formidable competitor, capturing third place despite facing significant challenges in the race’s latter stages. The excitement intensified as the peloton approached the final 50 kilometers, particularly near the base of the Cipressa climb, where the yellow-and-black squad was strategically positioned.
However, disaster struck just before the riders began the crucial climb: Tadej Pogacar crashed, causing a domino effect that also ensnared van Aert and Matteo Jorgenson. Despite the setback, the two cyclists regrouped and managed to catch up with the chasing pack before tackling the Poggio.
In the decisive moments of the race, van Aert benefitted from expert positioning by his teammates. As the climb reached its peak, he launched a powerful attack from the chasing group, showcasing his determination and skill. The Belgian finished strong, only four seconds off the winner, securing a well-earned third place.
“I’m very happy with my podium finish,” van Aert stated following the race. Reflecting on his strategic late attack, he said, “If the moment came, the plan was to go for it. Unfortunately, it wasn’t for the win, but after the crash and my bike change, this was the best possible outcome. We fought back well as a team and kept believing in a strong result. I’m very happy with my podium finish.”
Despite his achievement, van Aert expressed a tinge of regret for not being able to compete for the victory against his main rivals. “It’s a shame I couldn’t fight for the victory, but that’s how it goes. I kept pushing after the crash and gave it everything I could. To still finish third in the end is, of course, very satisfying.”
The final results of the race were as follows:
1. **Tadej Pogačar** (UAE Team Emirates) – 06:35:49
2. **Thomas Pidcock** (Pinarello Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team) – +00:00:00
3. **Wout van Aert** (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) – +00:00:04
16. **Christophe Laporte** (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) – +00:00:04
42. **Matteo Jorgenson** (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) – +00:00:42
Despite the chaos, van Aert’s determination and his team’s collective effort proved crucial, laying the groundwork for future successes in the cycling season.
