Van Aert crowns strong performance with podium place in Hofstade
# Wout van Aert Shines with Strong Performance, Secures Podium in Hofstade
In a thrilling follow-up to his first cyclocross race in Antwerp, Wout van Aert showcased his tenacity at the Hofstade event, where he set his sights on nothing short of a podium finish. After a commendable start, Van Aert initially positioned himself in fifth place. However, a slip during the second lap momentarily set him back. Demonstrating remarkable resilience, the Belgian cyclist surged back to claim second place in the race.
Despite Mathieu van der Poel’s early lead, Van Aert fought hard for the runner-up position, steadily gaining distance from his competitors. After nearly an hour of grueling competition, he crossed the finish line, securing second place. “I can be satisfied with my performance. Technically, I rode much better than in Antwerp,” Van Aert commented on his performance.
Looking back on his race, he reflected, “I didn’t hit the wall quite as hard, but that’s also because I didn’t have to go all out in the last three laps. That was what I was hoping for.” He expressed satisfaction with his start, stating, “I had a good start. I chose the right side of the field and immediately managed to overtake several people. In the first lap, I had to get into the rhythm. Halfway through, I found the legs that allowed me to put in a considerable effort.”
Van Aert also took a moment to appreciate the atmosphere in Hofstade. He remarked, “With three laps to go, I knew I wasn’t going to catch Mathieu. In some places, I was able to really enjoy the encouragement. I’m 31, but it’s still amazing to experience this.”
Looking ahead, Van Aert will be gearing up for the Superprestige in Heusden-Zolder. “I have fond memories of this cross. I’m really looking forward to riding there,” he concluded, ready to take on his next challenge.
