Tour of Guangxi. Max Kanter finishes second on Stage Two, takes overall lead
The second stage of the Tour of Guangxi took place in China. Despite several climbs along the route, the stage ended in a bunch sprint, where Astana Qazaqstan Team rider Max Kanter secured second place. Additionally, after two stages, Kanter moved into the overall lead and also took the lead in the points classification.
“Today was a very fast stage, with teams keeping a high pace all day because eight strong riders had broken away, and it wasn’t easy to keep them under control. On the last climb, the pace increased even more, but I managed to stay in the group. Then, Alexey Lutsenko helped position me well for the sprint. I gave it a try, did everything I could, but maybe I started my sprint a little too early, and then had to brake a bit, which cost me some speed. In the end, I finished second, which is a good result overall. I’m also happy to have taken the leader’s jersey, and I’ll do my best to defend it”, – said Max Kanter.
“Today we planned to fight for the stage with Max Kanter, as we were confident he could make it over the climb. In the finale, Alexey and Lorenzo helped him, and he finished second. It’s a good result, and we now lead the overall standings, so we continue the race in good spirits. In the upcoming stages, we’ll focus on defending our lead”, – added Dmitriy Fofonov, Sports Director of Astana Qazaqstan Team.
