Tom Donnenwirth just misses the final touch

# Tom Donnenwirth Falls Just Short at La Roue Tourangelle

In a day filled with promise but ultimately lacking the finishing touch, Tom Donnenwirth showcased his potential at La Roue Tourangelle, finishing in an unremarkable eleventh place despite being a strong contender in the final sprint.

The third round of the FDJ United Series kicked off on Sunday with the La Roue Tourangelle Centre Val de Loire – Groupama P.V.L., a challenging 200-kilometer course that favored both puncheurs and sprinters. Initially, sprinters dominated the cycling scene, but with just a few kilometers remaining, the puncheurs began to make their mark. “For 140 kilometers, three teams controlled the chase behind the breakaway,” stated Tanguy Turgis, sports director of the Groupama-FDJ United Cycling Team.

Turgis explained the team’s strategy: “For us, the plan was to make the race hard on the climbs and place Tom at the front, while keeping Matteo at the back in case of a sprint.” As tensions heightened in the final forty kilometers, the race became increasingly competitive. “The guys showed a great attitude, even though the team is very young,” Turgis observed, noting that three riders were current ‘La Conti’ members and others had recently transitioned from the same level.

The final stretches of the race were filled with anticipation. With sixteen kilometers left, a group of riders successfully broke away, including Donnenwirth. “Another group came back a few kilometers later with Eliott, but he cracked on the next climb,” Turgis mentioned, emphasizing the challenges faced by the team.

As the race approached its climax, the peloton remained tight-knit until a decisive split occurred with just nine kilometers to go. “We decided to focus on the sprint because there were three Cofidis riders and three TotalEnergies riders in that group,” Turgis explained. In the closing sprint, Donnenwirth found himself positioned well but faced an unfortunate setback. “He was very well-placed, on Venturini’s wheel,” added Turgis. However, road conditions disrupted his timing, and despite his efforts, Donnenwirth ultimately ran out of steam, failing to contest the victory claimed by Venturini.

“It could have been a very good day,” Turgis concluded. “He was there to win, and it’s a shame he fell just a little short.” The frustration was palpable; despite a commendable team performance, the results did not reflect the effort put in, leaving a bittersweet taste for the Groupama-FDJ squad.
