Thomas De Gendt Secures Impressive Victory at the Giro d’Italia

Belgian cyclist Thomas De Gendt has added another remarkable win to his cycling career. During the eighth stage of the Giro d’Italia, De Gendt, along with teammates Harm Vanhoucke and Sylvain Moniquet, formed part of a breakaway group of over twenty riders.

The challenging local circuit around Monte Procida led to the gradual reduction of the breakaway group. After a tactical battle, five riders, including De Gendt and Vanhoucke, managed to forge ahead. Although the five riders never gained a significant advantage over the pursuing group, the duo of Van der Poel and Girmay posed a close threat in the final kilometers. In the end, Vanhoucke set up the sprint for De Gendt, who unleashed a powerful acceleration and secured his second stage win at the Giro, exactly ten years after his first on the Stelvio.

In his post-race interview, De Gendt expressed his joy at the team’s performance, stating, “Today I really had a great day and with three teammates in the breakaway we could play a bit. We played it out perfectly. Due to illness and bad luck, I wasn’t able to perform the way I wanted in the last few years, so this win feels maybe even more special than the one on the Stelvio.”

De Gendt had doubts about his form leading up to the Giro but found reassurance in his victory. He drew parallels between this stage and a previous one in Barcelona during the Volta a Catalunya, noting, “The succession of climbs where it is difficult to recover suits me well, so I rode a tight pace up all the time to not really give anyone a rest.”

The Belgian cyclist’s confidence and strength in the sprint propelled him to victory. He praised Vanhoucke for his excellent teamwork in the final kilometers, stating, “At three hundred meters from the finish, I gave it my all, and that was enough to take the win.”

De Gendt’s triumph at the Giro d’Italia reaffirms his exceptional abilities and marks a significant milestone in his cycling career.
