Thank you, Jakob

Riding into Rome on Sunday in the Giro d’Italia will be an extra special moment for Jakob Fuglsang as he races for the final time with Israel – Premier Tech, calling time on a stellar career.

40 years old. 17 years as a pro. 27 wins. Countless memories.

In a video released today, Jakob said: “Hey everybody, I have a bit of news to announce. So when I signed my last contract with the team last year, we agreed on a seven-month deal for me to be able to be part of our GC project with Derek. We started last year with the Dauphiné, and it’s been a super nice journey, but the seven months are coming close, and so are our GC ambitions here at the Giro d’Italia.

“I’m here to announce that Sunday’s stage in the Giro will be my last one for the team. It has been a fantastic journey – I’ve enjoyed it and I’m happy that I can finish on a level where I can still make a difference, I can still be part of the race, still give something back to guys like Derek, and give something back to the team.

“I’ve had a fantastic career, it has brought me more than I ever hoped for. But everything good comes to an end, and it’s time for me to enjoy more time with the family and to let the young kids go ahead. So, Sunday will be my last race for Israel – Premier Tech. One last push, the last few days of the Giro, and then maybe I’ll see you in Denmark sometime in August.

“Thank you for cheering out there.”

Tak, Jakob.
