Christophe Laporte Claims European Cycling Title in Thrilling Finish
In a nail-biting race for national teams, Christophe Laporte emerged victorious after breaking away from a leading group, which included his own teammates. Despite only having a slim 10-second lead, Laporte managed to hold off his attacking teammates in the final moments of the race. This win marks Laporte’s fifth victory of the season.
Reflecting on his win, Laporte expressed his hope that his teammate Nathan would be proud of his performance. He said, “It’s still hard to believe…I want to dedicate this victory to my family and also to Nathan. I hope he’ll be proud to see me riding in this jersey.”
Despite his own strong performance, Wout Van Aert admitted that Laporte was simply stronger on the day. “Christophe was just too strong…He knows how to choose the right moment,” Van Aert acknowledged. The Team Jumbo-Visma rider also highlighted the strength of their team, as they had three riders on the podium.
Olav Kooij, who finished just behind Laporte, also praised his teammate’s strength and performance. “Christophe is a very strong rider…He beat Wout and me on value and is the rightful winner,” Kooij said.
