# Team Visma | Lease a Bike Navigates Chaotic Giro d’Italia Opening Stage
The much-anticipated 109th edition of the Giro d’Italia kicked off in Nessebar, Bulgaria, with a flat 147-kilometer route culminating in Burgas. As the race commenced, a two-man breakaway, comprising Manuele Tarozzi and Diego Sevilla, was kept in check by the sprint teams, only to see their efforts extinguished just over twenty kilometers from the finishing line.
As the stage transitioned into its final stretch, Team Visma | Lease a Bike wisely opted to maintain distance from the fray. A significant crash erupted within the peloton in the final kilometer, causing many riders to halt their efforts. However, a determined group of about ten cyclists surged ahead to contest the sprint finish, with Paul Magnier of Soudal Quick-Step emerging as the fastest.
All members of Team Visma | Lease a Bike crossed the finish safely, reflecting a cautious but strategic approach amid the upheaval.
“We decided to stay in the background during the finale,” noted sports director Marc Reef. He further emphasized the team’s priorities, stating, “The most important thing for us today was reaching the finish safely. The guys made it into the final five kilometers without any issues, so there was no longer any risk of losing time.” Reef also mentioned the high stakes often present in the opening stage of a Grand Tour, especially as things took a turn for the worst in the last kilometer.
Looking ahead, Reef remarked, “Tomorrow’s stage has a difficult finish with several technical sections. There are many riders who can dream of victory. For us, the main thing remains getting through the first three days in Bulgaria as well as possible.”
As the team gears up for the next stage, their focus remains on safety and performance, with twenty stages still ahead in this grueling competition.
