Emils Liepins battles to third Latvian Road Race Title in a row
Emils Liepins has won his third Latvian Road Race title in a row at the joint Estonian, Latvian, and Lithuanian Championships this afternoon. With his first victory in Team dsm-firmenich PostNL colors, it was the fourth title secured for the team this year and the third of the day.
The three baltic championship races in one race, took place over 160 kilometers on a lap that featured a one-kilometer climb. In the second of seven laps, he was part of a group of 15 that made the preselection before he dropped all Latvian riders left in that group on the final ascent and completed his title hat trick.
Liepins said about his title: “Tactically, it was a really hard race for me, as everyone was looking at me or trying to drop me with attacks. The race was really hectic from the beginning, but I stayed calm and waited for the others to burn themselves out. In the third lap, I made a move, and we ended up in a group with 15 guys. In the last lap, the attacks came again, and I could drop all the other Latvian riders on the climb. I am really happy to have won the title for the third time in a row now.”
