Unique Start at O Gran Camiño in Galicia: Opening Time Trial Affected by Weather Conditions
The opening time trial of O Gran Camiño in Galicia provided a special start to the race, with unique circumstances impacting the event in La Coruña on Thursday. Due to adverse weather conditions, specifically significant wind gusts, the first stage did not count towards the general classification. Participants were able to complete the course as they chose, creating an unconventional racing scenario.
According to the report, the race’s first stage around La Coruña was affected by the weather, leading to a neutralization of the general classification: “Due to strong gusts of wind, it was decided not to count the gaps, not to authorize time trial bikes, and only to award the stage win.” The adjustments made by the organizers due to the conditions created a distinctive atmosphere for the riders.
Jussi Veikkanen shared his thoughts on the challenging circumstances, emphasizing the team’s effort to adapt: “Our goal and will, despite all the modifications we faced, was still for everyone to do the work properly in order to get their bearings on the time trial.” The riders from Groupama-FDJ tackled the course, with Lenny Martinez putting in a solid performance despite the unconventional nature of the event.
While the weather impacted the opening time trial, the focus now shifts to the upcoming stages of the race: “We will first see how the weather develops. It should be a bit better. It’s a very punchy stage, with some tricky areas too, so we’ll have to be careful all day,” stated Jussi Veikkanen, highlighting the team’s cautious approach moving forward.
As the competition progresses, the riders will look ahead to the challenges that lie ahead in the hilly terrain of Galicia, ready to face the uncertainties of the road in pursuit of their racing goals.
