Strong Bounces Back with Fifth Place Finish as Impey Claims Most Aggressive on TDU Stage 4
Corbin Strong showcased his resilience on stage 4 of the Tour Down Under, recovering from a crash the previous day to sprint to fifth place in the uphill sprint in Willunga. Meanwhile, Daryl Impey was recognized as the most aggressive rider of the day after his impressive performance in the breakaway.
The team’s efforts on the demanding stage also resulted in Sebastian Berwick climbing to 17th place on the General Classification, with just five seconds separating him from the top-ten ahead of tomorrow’s summit finish.
“I didn’t have the best legs on the uphill sprint but I was happy to come away with fifth place,” said Corbin, acknowledging the team’s efforts in positioning and keeping him safe.
In a flying start to the race, the breakaway only formed later with Impey and Jonas Rutsch from EF Education-EasyPost going ahead. They built a four-minute lead, which diminished quickly when strong winds split the peloton.
The breakaway was caught by the front group featuring Strong, Berwick, and Simon Clarke, with Impey immediately taking charge at the front to maintain the split. As a result, Impey was named the most aggressive rider of the day.
“It wasn’t really the tactic of the team, I just followed the race and then looked back and we had a gap… It was okay. It’s nice to have red numbers tomorrow for my last ever Tour Down Under stage,” added Impey.
Thanks to Clarke’s excellent positioning, Strong entered the final corner among the top ten riders. He then launched his sprint with 150 meters to go and secured a fifth-place finish, with Bryan Coquard from Cofidis taking the win. Berwick’s improved position on the General Classification sets the stage for tomorrow’s Mount Lofty summit finish.
Unfortunately, Taj Jones suffered a heavy crash but thankfully only sustained multiple abrasions and contusions on his neck and elbow.
