Stefan Küng Reflects on E3 Saxo Classic Performance and Looks Ahead to Ghent-Wevelgem
Swiss cyclist Stefan Küng recently battled in the first “Flemish” round at the E3 Saxo Classic, putting up a strong fight amidst intense competition. Despite facing challenges throughout the race, Küng remained resilient and showed determination on the tough course, ultimately finishing in sixteenth place within a second chasing group. Looking ahead to the next challenge at Ghent-Wevelgem, Küng and his team are focused on improving their performance and aiming for better results.
The E3 Saxo Classic served as the opening of the Flemish Classics’ campaign, setting the tone for the upcoming races leading up to Paris-Roubaix. The demanding 207-kilometre route, featuring seventeen bergs and nine cobbled sectors, provided a challenging backdrop for the riders. The race kicked off with a fast pace, with Küng navigating through the peloton strategically to maintain his position in the group.
Reflecting on the race dynamics, Küng highlighted the tough nature of the event, stating, “It was a very tough race which started as expected in the Taaienberg. Then followed a bergs sequence where it was only about attacking, attacking, and attacking. It was hard.” Despite putting in a strong effort and attempting to break away at various points in the race, Küng faced stiff competition from his rivals, including eventual winner Mathieu van der Poel.
Team strategy also played a crucial role in the outcome of the race, with Küng noting the absence of teammate Valentin Madouas in the decisive moments. Team director Frédéric Guesdon acknowledged the importance of strategic positioning and collaboration in such challenging races, emphasizing the need for improved teamwork in the upcoming events.
Looking forward to the next challenge at Ghent-Wevelgem, Küng expressed his ambition and determination to achieve better results. He acknowledged the hard work put in by his teammates and remains optimistic about their prospects in the upcoming races. Guesdon echoed Küng’s sentiments, emphasizing the team’s readiness for the demanding race ahead and the return of additional riders to strengthen their lineup.
As the riders gear up for Ghent-Wevelgem, they are determined to learn from their experiences at the E3 Saxo Classic and make the necessary adjustments to deliver a better performance. The upcoming race presents another opportunity for Küng and his teammates to showcase their strength and teamwork on the challenging Flemish terrain.
