Matthew Riccitello Maintains Lead in Yellow Jersey at Tour de l’Avenir

Matthew Riccitello is on the cusp of achieving his dream of winning the prestigious U23 stage race, the Tour de l’Avenir. With just one stage and a hundred kilometers to go, Riccitello has strengthened his grip on the yellow jersey.

During a double stage, Riccitello showcased his skills in both the time trial (TT) and the mountains. Despite pouring rain, Riccitello excelled in the eleven kilometer climbing TT, finishing first with a thirty-nine second lead over his closest competitor. Reflecting on the experience, Riccitello said, “It was fun. I love time trialling, and I love climbing, so it was the perfect combination.”

In the afternoon’s seventy kilometer stage, Riccitello faced challenges as various riders pushed the pace and attempted breakaways. His USA teammates fell behind, leaving him isolated in a lead group of twenty-five riders. However, Riccitello stayed composed and managed to minimize his losses. He emphasized, “It wasn’t the ideal situation, but I was aware of the significant lead I had. I knew if I stayed calm, I could retain the jersey. In the end, I succeeded in minimizing my losses.”

With a fifty-four-second lead heading into the final stage, which features a climb favorable to him, Riccitello remains focused. He acknowledges that the race is far from decided, saying, “It’s definitely going to be another challenging day. The race is far from decided.”
