Smooth fourth stage in Vuelta a España, Vingegaard hands over red jersey
# Vuelta a España Stage 4: Smooth Transition as Vingegaard Hands Over Red Jersey
The fourth stage of the Vuelta a España wrapped up today in Voiron, France, marking a successful outing for Team Visma | Lease a Bike. Danish rider Jonas Vingegaard not only gained a stage victory but also maintained the red jersey for two consecutive days before passing it on to France’s David Gaudu.
Today’s event featured three categorized climbs early on before a long descent set the pace for the riders as they approached the finish line. An early breakaway consisting of five riders was swiftly caught, allowing the sprinter teams to dominate the final stages of the race. Ultimately, it was Ben Turner from INEOS Grenadiers who crossed the line first, finishing at 4:50:14.
Vingegaard finished safely within the pack but came in behind Gaudu, resulting in a shift of the leader’s jersey. Now, Vingegaard sits in second place overall, tied on time with the new leader.
“Jonas came through the stage really well,” said sports director Jesper Mørkøv, acknowledging the team’s efforts. “It was a perfect day for our team. Compliments to the whole team. They did an excellent job bringing our leader to the line safely. The final part of the stage towards the finish was particularly hectic.”
Looking ahead, the team is preparing for the team time trial tomorrow, marking the first Spanish stage of the competition. “We’re happy with today’s strong performance,” Mørkøv added. “Tomorrow, the next challenge awaits us. We’re looking forward to it.”
