Sep Vanmarcke’s Farewell from Spring Classics: A Redemption
The 2023 Gent – Wevelgem race marked a triumphant moment for Sep Vanmarcke as he secured a podium finish, thirteen years after his first podium at the event.
Reflecting on his performance, Vanmarcke expressed, “I had a good winter and I stayed healthy. I didn’t have any injuries. I have felt good and have been racing at a high level. I’m just missing a little bit and I was thinking maybe this is just what I have left in my tank now, this is my best level, but now [this result] proves that if you keep trying for your best, at one point you will get a good result.”
Vanmarcke’s relentless spirit was evident as he helped dictate the pace in the closing kilometers, ultimately securing a well-deserved podium spot. His daughter even joined him on the podium, making the day truly unforgettable.
While his dreams of a Paris – Roubaix podium were cut short due to unexpected crashes, Vanmarcke’s retirement from racing in July marked the end of his Spring Classics era. However, his journey continues as he joins IPT’s sporting and performance team in 2024, bringing invaluable experience and knowledge.
