Samuele Battistella Falls Short in Vuelta a España Yet Again

Samuele Battistella, of the Astana Qazaqstan Team, narrowly missed out on a stage win in the Vuelta a España for the second time. Battistella was in contention for victory in Stage 9 but was overtaken by Louis Meintjes on the final climb to Les Praeres. Despite finishing in second place, Battistella remains determined to give it his all in the remainder of the race.

In a post-race interview, Battistella acknowledged Meintjes’ superiority on the climb, saying, “I knew that Meintjes would be faster than me on the last climb. That’s why I anticipated. Unfortunately, he caught me. Then I decided to continue at my own pace until the finish line. It made no sense to try to follow him, I would have exploded and now I finish second. Again second. My second second place in three days. I am happy, but I need to say not extremely happy. But I will try again at this Vuelta as I cannot complain about my shape.”

Despite Battistella’s disappointment, his teammate, Miguel Angel Lopez, had a solid performance, finishing seventh among the General Classification contenders and 13th in the stage. Lopez’s result has propelled him to eighth place overall.

After a grueling day in Asturias with a punishing final climb, the riders will have a well-deserved rest day in Alicante before continuing the race.
