Rudy Molard in the mix with the best

# Rudy Molard Seizes the Moment in Tour de Pologne Showdown

As the Tour de Pologne draws to a close, competitive spirits remain high amongst the contenders, particularly for Rudy Molard of Groupama-FDJ. The penultimate stage, a challenging time trial around Bukowina, saw Molard finishing fourteenth, just eight seconds adrift of Victor Langellotti, the day’s victor. This performance solidified his same position overall, leaving him 44 seconds behind the leader.

The stakes rose dramatically following the neutralization of Stage 3, known for its significant elevation gain, leading to a vital showdown on the sixth stage tailored for climbers and punchers. The day featured seven climbs, with steep gradients of 10-12% poised to create substantial gaps, particularly on the final two hills within the last fifteen kilometers.

Early in the race, Enzo Paleni attempted to join the breakaway but was soon forced to retreat, grappling with an illness that has reportedly affected several riders in the peloton. “He felt the right move, anticipated well, but he quickly realized he wasn’t feeling well,” noted team coach Jussi Veikkanen, underscoring the challenges posed by a virus that’s impacted team dynamics.

As the race progressed, Rudy managed to stay with the leading group of favorites, joined by teammates Thibaud Gruel and Stefan Küng. The final climbs, notably the steep Ściana Bukovina, saw Molard initially hold his ground amongst the elite riders. “Rudy couldn’t recover,” reflected Veikkanen, emphasizing the toll the relentless pace exacted on the riders.

In a last-ditch effort, Molard executed his team’s strategy during the climactic finish. “Rudy’s instructions were to wait on the steep section, then give it a try when it was a bit more rolling, and take advantage of the favorites looking at each other to try and find an opening,” explained Veikkanen. However, the challenge was immense, and despite giving it his all, he couldn’t quite regain the energy needed for the final sprint.

With Langellotti catching Brandon McNulty to secure the stage win, Molard’s fourteenth-place finish means he retains his overall position heading into the final day. As the Tour de Pologne prepares for its concluding 12.5-kilometer time trial, focus shifts toward the upcoming Vuelta, which kicks off in just two weeks. “The goal is for everyone to be 100% committed tomorrow,” stated Veikkanen, stressing the need for perfect execution as the group gears up for future challenges.
