Reef Roberts claims his first victory

# Reef Roberts Celebrates First Victory at West Bohemia Tour

Excitement reverberated across the Czech Republic on Friday as Reef Roberts secured his first professional victory during the inaugural road stage of the West Bohemia Tour. Following a prologue in which his teammate, Titouan Fontaine, impressively took seventh place, Roberts powered through the 150-kilometer stage in Rokycany, clinching the win after a bold attack in the final stretch.

Roberts, representing “La Conti” Groupama-FDJ, executed a stellar sprint against his breakaway companions to claim the coveted victory. “It’s nice to finally see my efforts pay off,” said Roberts, who now finds himself in third place overall, with teammate Fontaine in fifth.

The race, which started on Thursday with a short, challenging prologue of 3,700 meters—characterized by a steep incline—set the stage for a competitive atmosphere among the riders. Fontaine led the charge for “La Conti,” finishing just seven seconds behind the day’s Belgian winner, Mauro Cuylits, demonstrating strong potential from the team, which is comprised of only four members.

On Friday, the road stage around Rokycany featured an impressive 2,500 meters of elevation and five classified climbs. Team director Jérôme noted, “We had looked at how the race unfolded last year and were cautious, given that many breakaways succeeded.” After a conservative start, the race dynamic shifted dramatically, with rampant attacks emerging after the halfway point.

Roberts recounted the pivotal moments of the race: “I was towards the front in the two steep climbs, then it eased up a bit… I thought ‘why not’ and gave it a crack.” This bold maneuver allowed him and his companions to forge a gap that the peloton struggled to close.

As the race progressed, twelve riders formed the leading group while nine others, including Fontaine and Rémi Daumas, chased closely behind. The organization among the peloton faltered, allowing the front group to focus solely on the prize.

With only fifteen kilometers to go, Roberts successfully navigated the final climbs, setting the stage for his sprint. “Coming into the last kilometer, a Lotto rider attacked… Before the last corner, 300 meters to go, I was in fifth wheel.” Confident in his capabilities, Roberts launched himself forward with 250 meters left, ultimately holding off all competitors to claim victory.

The win not only marks Roberts’ first in the U23 ranks but also a major accomplishment in the “La Conti” jersey. Jérôme expressed pride in Roberts’ performance, stating, “Reef was a little disappointed with his prologue yesterday, but he was revengeful and in good shape today.”

Behind Roberts, Fontaine and Daumas finished 13th and 21st, respectively. With this success, Roberts stands just four seconds behind race leader Federico Savino, while Fontaine sits eleven seconds back.

As the team looks forward to the remaining stages, Jérôme highlighted the challenges ahead, stating, “Tomorrow, we will have 2,500 meters of elevation again, but with a climb of eight kilometers at 6% after fifty kilometers.” The dynamic nature of the race promises continued excitement for both the riders and supporters as they gear up for the next challenges at the West Bohemia Tour.
