Rick Zabel Takes the Lead in the Maglia Azzurra at Giro d’Italia
German cyclist Rick Zabel has become the official leader of the Maglia Azzurra leaderboard at the Giro d’Italia after scoring another two points on the KOM on stage 3. Zabel battled against Pascal Eenkhorn and although he finished second on the climb, he is now tied with Eenkhorn with five points. However, due to his higher placement in the General Classification, Zabel has taken the lead.
Zabel expressed his happiness at wearing the blue jersey, but also voiced his disappointment in not being able to help his teammate Giacomo in the sprint. He said, “I’m leading the standings…my focus for the rest of the race is my role in the sprint train and delivering a stage win with Giacomo.”
As the race moves to Italy, Zabel is set to enjoy another day in the Maglia Azzurra on stage four before the challenging Mount Etna stage on Tuesday, where he is unlikely to compete for the win.
For now, Zabel remains in the blue jersey as the leader of the Maglia Azzurra.
