Rémi Cavagna Dominates Slovakia Opening Stage with Solo Victory

Soudal Quick-Step rider Rémi Cavagna claimed an impressive solo victory in the first stage of the Okolo Slovenska race in Slovakia. The Frenchman, known as the “TGV of Clermont-Ferrand,” showcased his time trial skills to build a substantial lead and secure the squad’s 47th win of the season.

Cavagna, along with teammate Kasper Asgreen, initiated the breakaway on the first classified climb of the day, quickly establishing a 1:40 gap over the peloton. Despite the challenge of the remaining terrain, the leaders worked together effectively. Cavagna took advantage of the second intermediate sprint to make his decisive move, widening his lead with each passing kilometer.

“Our goal today was to go for the win with Tim Merlier, but we knew that it was going to be difficult with those climbs in the first kilometers of the stage, and that’s where the breakaway formed,” Cavagna explained. “It was a strong group at the front, but when the collaboration stopped, I decided to attack with 50 kilometers to go.”

With this victory, Cavagna now holds a commanding position in the general classification and also leads the points classification. The team is determined to maintain their lead and is motivated by racing in the home country of their sponsor, janom.

Teammate Kasper Asgreen, who remained in the chasing group, finished a strong third in the stage, rounding out the podium. The Soudal Quick-Step team is confident in their chances for continued success.
