Remco Evenepoel Continues to Shine at La Vuelta
Belgian rider Remco Evenepoel continues to make his mark at La Vuelta as he lights up the race once again on stage 15. Evenepoel, riding for Soudal Quick-Step, was determined to make it into the breakaway and launched multiple attacks throughout the day.
Before the stage, Evenepoel and his teammates showed their support for Morocco, a country recently affected by an earthquake, by carrying the Moroccan flag to the podium.
Despite facing resistance from the peloton, Evenepoel persisted and managed to join a strong breakaway group on the Puerto de Lizarraga climb. The group established a three-minute gap over the chasers, with Evenepoel contributing to the effort and picking up points in the mountain classification.
On the final climb, Evenepoel found himself behind a three-man group. Despite a 30-second deficit, he nearly made a comeback on the descent and finished the stage just two seconds behind the winner.
Reflecting on his performance, Evenepoel said, “I went quite deep today and began feeling quite quickly that my legs were a bit tired after Saturday’s ride, but that didn’t stop me from giving my best. I would have loved to win again, but you can’t do it every time…I’m looking forward to the rest day, and then I will continue to focus on taking the best climber jersey home.”
This is the second consecutive day that Evenepoel has been awarded the prize for the most combative rider.
