Remco Evenepoel Continues to Dominate the Mountains at Vuelta a España
Belgian cyclist Remco Evenepoel extended his lead in the mountains classification at the Vuelta a España with another impressive ride in stage 17. Evenepoel attacked from kilometer zero and was active throughout the stage, attempting to secure his position and earn a shot at victory on the challenging Alto de l’Angliru climb.
Evenepoel, along with his Soudal Quick-Step teammate Mattia Cattaneo, managed to break away from the peloton and open up a gap of nearly three minutes. Cattaneo’s strong performance helped Evenepoel increase his advantage in the race. However, with five kilometers to go on the difficult Angliru climb, Evenepoel was caught by the chasing pack, led by Primoz Roglic.
Despite finishing behind the leaders, Evenepoel secured the King of the Mountains jersey and another combativity award. Speaking after the stage, Evenepoel praised his teammate’s contributions and expressed his determination to continue gaining points in the mountains classification: “We did a two-man breakaway and it wasn’t easy, but Mattia was very strong there and he deserves the combativity award as much as I do. The moment I got caught I began saving some energy for Thursday, when we’ll try again to take as many points as possible.”
