Team Visma | Lease a Bike Faces Disappointment in the Opening Stage of UAE Tour
Team Visma | Lease a Bike experienced a challenging start in the opening stage of the 2024 UAE Tour, as sprinter Olav Kooij dropped back on the uphill stretch, failing to secure a top-ten position. However, amidst the disappointment, Loe van Belle managed to secure the white jersey thanks to a clever trick during the stage.
Van Belle expressed his delight at riding in the white jersey, stating, “Riding in the white jersey in a WorldTour race is a nice bonus. It remains very special for me to be able to ride around in such a strong field of competitors.” Despite this achievement, the team’s focus remains on supporting Kooij’s pursuit for a stage win in the competition.
Sports director Maarten Wynants reflected on the sprint, lamenting the missed opportunity for Kooij and the team. Despite this setback, Wynants noted, “Fortunately, there are still some chances coming up this week,” expressing optimism for the upcoming stages.
The stage was not without its challenges, with a massive crash in the final kilometer involving Attila Valter. However, the team remains hopeful as Valter’s injuries appear to be manageable, and the possibility of continuing in the race remains.
As the UAE Tour progresses, Team Visma | Lease a Bike is gearing up for further opportunities and remains committed to supporting Kooij’s quest for a stage win.
