ProTeam Lotto–Intermarché rides a strong Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, but unfortunately returns home empty-handed

# Lotto–Intermarché Faces Challenges at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad

The opening race of the cycling season, Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, proved to be a daunting challenge for Lotto–Intermarché, with high winds and crashes impacting their performance. The team returned home without any rewards, despite their determination and effort.

Early in the race, Luca Van Boven was involved in a crash but fortunately escaped serious injury. The adverse weather conditions only added to the race’s intensity, fostering an environment rife with nervousness as cyclists scrambled to maintain front positions. Arnaud De Lie described his experience, noting, “There were a huge number of crashes, probably also because of the strong wind. It only increases the nervousness: everyone constantly wants to be at the front, which simply raises the risk of crashes even more. I think this must have been the most dangerous Omloop Het Nieuwsblad of my life.”

Despite demonstrating strong form, De Lie encountered misfortune just five kilometers before reaching the Muur van Geraardsbergen when a crash occurred nearby. He recounted, “I was riding a good race, it felt like a perfect day… Unfortunately, it didn’t bring a result, but I will take it into tomorrow. I definitely gained confidence.”

As they approached the Molenberg, the team remained strategically well-placed, but a significant crash hindered their progress. Performance manager Aike Visbeek elaborated, “At that point Arnaud (De Lie) hesitated to follow Tim Van Dijke. In the end he didn’t, but after that we immediately started riding. Unfortunately, a major crash held us up and we go home empty-handed.”

Ultimately, Jenno Berckmoes emerged as the team’s top finisher, completing the race in sixteenth place.

In the women’s category, Lea Lin Teutenberg was noted for being part of the breakaway, showcasing the ongoing efforts and resilience of Lotto–Intermarché athletes amid a challenging race day.

Overall, the team demonstrated potential despite the setbacks, aiming to turn their experiences into motivation for future competitions.
