ProTeam Cycling Team Faces Challenges and Remains Optimistic Amid Postponed Races

John Lelangue, general manager of Lotto Soudal, expressed his disappointment over the postponement of Paris-Roubaix and Liege-Bastogne-Liege due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He acknowledged the impact it has on the team’s investment and the need to satisfy sponsors. He stated, “Each year we work hard, and we fight to close the budget, so you want to give your sponsors the appropriate return. And just this season we were well prepared for the spring classics.”

Lelangue also highlighted the understanding of their sponsors about the situation and the economic challenges they face. He emphasized the team’s efforts to keep the cyclists motivated during these uncertain times, stating that most riders are already highly motivated and had to be restrained from intense training abroad.

Regarding when races will be organized again, Lelangue acknowledged that the situation is uncertain, but the team is ready to compete for victory as soon as it is permitted. He also mentioned the importance of maintaining public health and the need for riders to train at a lower intensity to reduce vulnerability to diseases.

In terms of personnel, Lelangue mentioned that while some staff members are currently out of work, the team is keeping them employed to maintain a positive atmosphere within the group. He anticipated a busy autumn season and hopes that many canceled races will find a place on the calendar with the support of organizers and the UCI.

Despite the challenges, Lelangue remains optimistic about the future, stating, “Unfortunately, we must bite the bullet now. The end is not yet in sight. On the contrary. As a team, we obey the rules imposed by the government and by our doctors. For this generation, this is an unprecedented situation. I am glad everybody is understanding the severity of the situation. And one day, the sun will shine again.”
