Pello Bilbao Impresses with Top-Five Finish on Stage 2 of Tour de France
Pello Bilbao of Team Bahrain-Victorious showcased his cycling prowess on home roads as he secured a top-five finish on Stage 2 of the Tour de France. The Basque rider attempted to break away from a group of 24 riders, which included many of the race’s top contenders and the sprint favorite, Wout van Aert of Team Jumbo-Visma.
Despite the presence of Van Aert, Bilbao launched a brave attack with 9km remaining. However, he was reeled back in by the group with 5km to go as Team Jumbo-Visma took control of the race. Ultimately, it was Victor Lafay of Cofidis who made an early sprint from 1km out and claimed the victory.
Reflecting on his performance, Bilbao expressed satisfaction with his overall effort, stating, “This was a movement that was planned from the beginning of the stage… I tried also in the last sprint, and I took the right wheel with Tadej, but yeah, not really the best legs for the sprint, but I wanted to try and give everything, and I’m really motivated to continue fighting as we will have other great opportunities for sure.”
Bilbao’s teammates, Mikel Landa and Jack Haig, also had impressive performances, finishing in the first group. Landa currently sits in 9th place in the general classification after two challenging stages.
Looking ahead, Stage 3 from Amorebieta-Etxano to Bayonne has been slightly modified, with an extra 6.1 kilometers added to the route in order to avoid road furniture. The riders will continue to push themselves as the Tour de France progresses, seeking more opportunities to shine.
