Maryland Cycling Classic, presented by UnitedHealthcare, Features Tour de France Notables in Preliminary Rider Lineup
Some of the biggest stars from this year’s Tour de France and recent World Championships were announced today in the preliminary rosters for the second edition of the Maryland Cycling Classic, presented by UnitedHealthcare. The race will take place on September 3rd, covering a distance of 121.9 miles from Sparks, Md., to Baltimore’s Inner Harbor.
Among the notable riders participating in the event are Tour de France stage winners Michael Woods, Victor Lafay, and Giulio Ciccone, as well as top American rider Neilson Powless and fourth place finisher Simon Yates. The preliminary roster includes a total of 112 cyclists representing 16 elite teams.
Neilson Powless, who finished third in last year’s race, expressed his excitement about competing in America’s biggest race again. He said, “Last year, the race was really exciting. Being able to race around downtown in a major city like Baltimore was fun. So, I’m really looking forward to being back to compete in America’s biggest race again.”
The field also includes other prominent riders from the WorldTour and Pro Tour teams, such as Simon Clarke, Mattias Skjelmose, Hugo Houle, Tony Gallopin, and Lawson Craddock, among others.
According to Chris Aronhalt, President of Medalist Sports, the race’s event manager, “This is going to be one of the most exciting fields to watch on American soil since 2019. The strong mix of talented teams will surely provide a dynamic race from the rolling hills to the city center of Baltimore.”
The Maryland Cycling Classic is part of a four-day weekend community celebration of health and wellness, featuring participatory events, an interactive festival, local food and drinks, and other family-friendly activities. The race is sanctioned by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) and USA Cycling.
