Dutch cyclist Olav Kooij showcased his speed and determination with a powerful sprint in the fifth stage of Paris-Nice, emerging victorious amidst a challenging race. Reflecting on the intense day, Kooij shared, “It was a hard race, especially because there was a strong breakaway. In addition, we had headwind the whole day.” He acknowledged the dedication of his teammates, stating, “My teammates worked very hard in the chase and dropped me off well in the final. I’m grateful to them for that.”

The stage saw significant efforts from Team Visma | Lease a Bike, with riders like Mick van Dijke and Koen Bouwman leading the chase to reel in the breakaway group. Despite a demanding middle section with third-category climbs, the peloton pushed on, setting the stage for an exciting finish.

Kooij expressed his satisfaction with the win, stating, “We had planned to go for a sprint today. It’s very nice that it all came together.” This victory marks Kooij’s fourth win of the season, following previous successes in the UAE Tour and the Clasica de Almeria.

Looking ahead, Kooij outlined further ambitions for the team, mentioning, “For me, this edition of Paris-Nice is already more than successful, but we have other goals. In the upcoming, more difficult stages we aim for a good result with Matteo Jorgensen and Wilco Kelderman.”

With Kooij’s triumph, Team Visma | Lease a Bike’s tally of victories now stands at eleven, affirming their competitive prowess in the cycling world. The Paris-Nice stage race continues to showcase thrilling performances from top riders, setting the stage for more exciting battles ahead.
