Neilson Powless Returns to Maryland Cycling Classic with Motivation to Prove Himself

Neilson Powless of Team EF-Education Easypost, America’s top finisher in the recent professional World Championships road race, is determined to demonstrate his podium finish was no fluke as he gears up for the Maryland Cycling Classic.

Noted for his expertise in multi-day races, Powless is currently the best professional cyclist in America. His impressive performance in the Tour de France, where he spent 10 days in the polka dot jersey, solidified his position as one of the world’s top climbers. With over 8,000 feet of climbing in this year’s Maryland race, it’s no surprise that Powless finished third in last year’s event.

Reflecting on his experience in the 2022 race, Powless expressed his excitement to return, saying, “It was an incredible event. Huge crowds, really challenging but fun course. The organization and publicity was awesome. I can’t wait to come back and race next year.”

With last year’s champion, Sep Vanmarcke, retiring due to health reasons, the door is open for a new champion at this year’s Maryland Cycling Classic.

Powless will lead the strong EF Education-Easypost team and is thrilled to race on American soil again. He expressed his anticipation for the race, particularly for the chance to explore downtown Baltimore and enjoy the local cuisine.

Being part of a family deeply involved in sports, Powless has cycling in his blood. His sister Shayna is an elite cyclist, while his mother Jen Allred was an Olympic marathoner from Guam. Powless himself is proud to be the first American Indian to compete in the Tour de France.

Powless had a remarkable year, winning a major race in France and securing a top 5 finish in the prestigious Tour of Flanders. While he faded to 11th place in the UCI World Championships road race, Powless remains determined to continue his success.

Returning to his home country for the Maryland Cycling Classic holds extra significance for Powless, as he and his wife Chae are expecting their first child in October. Additionally, the race falls on his 27th birthday, making a victory an ideal birthday gift.
