Neilson Powless Aims to Continue Success at Maryland Cycling Classic
America’s top finisher in the recent professional World Championships road race in Glasgow, Scotland, Neilson Powless of Team EF-Education Easypost is motivated to return to the Maryland Cycling Classic, presented by UnitedHealthcare, and prove his podium finish was no aberration.
“It was great to race again in a major race on American soil,” Powless said immediately following the 2022 event, which saw him finish only a bike-length behind winner Sep Vanmarcke of Belgium. “It was an incredible event. Huge crowds, really challenging but fun course. The organization and publicity was awesome. I can’t wait to come back and race next year.”
Powless is currently America’s best professional cyclist and is noted as a multi-day specialist. His performance in the Tour de France’s polka dot jersey this past July showed that he remains one of the world’s top climbers. With more than 8,000 feet of climbing in this year’s Maryland race, Powless is poised to make another strong showing.
Powless comes from a family of athletes, and his cycling achievements have been impressive. He was the first American Indian in the Tour de France and won the polka-dot jersey early in the race. He also had a top 5 finish in the Tour of Flanders.
After racing well around the world, Powless is excited to return to his home country and participate in the Maryland Cycling Classic. This year’s race holds special significance as it falls on his 27th birthday, and he and his wife are also expecting their first child in October.
With his sights set on victory, Powless and his EF Education-Easypost team will be leading the charge at the Maryland Cycling Classic on September 3rd.
