Mike Woods: “All good things must come to an end”

# Mike Woods Bids Farewell: “All Good Things Must Come to an End”

Mike Woods has been a powerhouse in the cycling world—a stage winner at the Tour de France, an accomplished bike rider, an admired teammate, and a devoted family man. Recently, he shared his final blog post, inviting fans to reflect on his journey and the sport that shaped his life.

Woods has spent the past five years riding for Israel Premier Tech, and as he prepares to hang up his cycling shoes, he reflects on the unique and demanding journey of professional cycling. He poignantly notes, “Almost every time I race a bike, there is a point where I am flying along… and I think, ‘A million years ago, we were monkeys.’ This sport is crazy… Riding around France, while literally billions of people watch, is my job, and that is nuts.”

Among the thrills of chasing championships, Woods also acknowledges the sport’s inherent dangers and personal sacrifices. “I once asked staff on my team… how much would they have to be paid, to drive around in a car at 50 km/h, 70 days a year… Statistically, that is roughly how many times the average pro rider crashes per season,” he explains. This shocking reality underscores the mental and physical toll of his profession.

Fatherhood has also played a crucial role in Woods’s decision to retire. “Being a father… has shown me how at odds being one of the best riders in the world is with being a good dad,” he writes. The extensive commitment required for a cycling career has often meant sacrificing quality time with his family.

Despite this, Woods proudly reflects on his achievements: “This maximal focus has taken me to winning a bronze medal at the World Championships, second place at a monument, and a stage victory at the world’s biggest bike race.” From humble beginnings on a $1,000 bike gifted by his parents, Woods has risen to become one of the top cyclists globally—a testament to his hard work and dedication.

As he announces his retirement, Woods states, “As they say, though, all good things must come to an end.” However, he is excited about the future, hinting at new ventures in endurance sports.

Woods concludes his heartfelt message with gratitude for those who supported him throughout his career: “To all the people who have helped me… I want to say thank you. Thank you for it all.”

Mike Woods may be stepping away from the racing scene, but his legacy as a fierce competitor and loving family man will endure.
